Terminology and Artifacts for DirectTrust Standards and Initiatives

This is the main entry page for the terminology and technical artifacts created and maintained by DirectTrust. It comprises the Naming Systems, Code Systems, and Value Sets cited in DirectTrust published assets (Standards and Implementation Guides), in a convenient browsable form. It also includes DirectTrust Artifacts: the Profiles and Extensions, Search Parameters, Examples, and Schemas that support those Standards and Implementation Guides.

Select an asset type above, then choose a resource by name to see its details. Each page links to raw json and to the resource in the objects repository.

Types of Terminology

Naming Systems

A naming system is a curated namespace that issues unique symbols within that namespace for the identification of concepts, people, devices, etc. It represents a "system" used within the identifier and coding data types and can be noted in a registry for other systems to find and understand. In FHIR, a naming system is represented using the NamingSystem resource.

Code Systems

A code system declares the existence of and describes a system of codes with key properties, and optionally defines part or all of its content. Code systems define which codes (symbols and/or expressions) exist, and how they are understood. In FHIR, a code system is represented using the CodeSystem resource.

Value Sets

A value set specifies a set of codes drawn from one or more code systems, intended for use in a particular context. It defines the range of coded concepts that can be populated within a coded element in a data structure. A value set expansion is the set of coded concepts resulting from applying a value set definition to a specific version of the indicated code systems; expansions are created at runtime or generated as needed for use in specific applications.

Artifacts

Artifacts are the technical definitions and supporting files that DirectTrust publishes alongside its terminology. They describe how DirectTrust data is structured, searched, and exchanged:

  • Profiles and Extensions (StructureDefinitions): constraints on FHIR resources and the additional data elements DirectTrust defines, such as HISP ID, identity assurance level, location information, and publishability.
  • Search Parameters: additional ways to search FHIR resources, such as by HISP ID.
  • Capability Statements: what DirectTrust systems and tools support, such as the MaP Payload Testing Tool.
  • Schemas: the schema definitions for DirectTrust specifications.
  • Examples: sample content illustrating how the specifications are used.
